2016–17  Music Placement Session Information               4/2/2016

1. Informational meeting

An informational meeting for all students new to the Music Program takes place on the first day of classes in the fall.

2. Placement session for Individual Music Instruction

Students new to Individual Music Instruction may be assigned a placement session during the first few days of school. (Typically, these are students who have previously studied piano or voice and are requesting continued study. Depending on instructor availability, occasionally other students are assigned a placement session, as well.) Students should be sure to have their instruments available and be prepared to play a scale and a piece of music they are familiar with (3 to 5 minutes in length) that best demonstrates their skill level.

3. Placement session for Chamber Music Ensembles

Students new to Chamber Music Ensembles are assigned a placement session during the first few days of school. Students should be sure to have their instruments available and be prepared to play a major and minor scale, to sight read, and to play one or two solo pieces (total length 3 to 5 minutes) that best demonstrate their skill level. There is no need to play an entire movement, but repertoire should include examples of playing in fast and slow tempi.

4. Placement session for other ensembles requiring continued instrumental study

Students new to Jazz Ensemble, Advanced Jazz Ensemble, or the Vocal Jazz and Pop Ensemble instrumental band (vocalists are placed during spring of the previous school year) are assigned a placement session during the first few days of school. Students should be sure to have their instruments available and be prepared to play any scales they know, to play a piece of music they are familiar with (3 to 5 minutes in length) that best demonstrates their skill level, to sight read, and to improvise using the blues scale if possible.
