Placement Test Instructions for Modern Languages (French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Spanish for Heritage Speakers)
Please follow these instructions if you are taking a placement test for French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, or Spanish for Heritage Speakers. (Instructions for the Latin placement test are at a separate link.) The online placement test should take about 50 minutes to complete. You will be tested on your understanding of grammar, your speaking skills, your writing skills, and your reading comprehension of the target language.
Before you begin, it is also important that your computer has an internal or external microphone. If you are asked whether your computer should allow access to the microphone, please click "yes."
To access the placement test, be sure that your computer is connected to the Internet. Use the Chrome or Edge web browser, not Firefox or Safari. Open up the following link on your web browser:
You will be asked to enter a username and password. For your username, enter your name using the following format: firstname.lastname (for instance, annie.falk). Your first name is the preferred name you shared during the admissions process. For the password, enter the word "placement" not including the quotation marks. Then click the Login button.
Once you enter SmartClass+, you will be asked to select a class. Choose the placement test for the language you want to take. You will then see multiple sections. Click on each section to complete that part of the test. Each section is timed, so be ready to begin once you click on the Start button. If you finish the section before time runs out, you may click on the "Finished My Exercise" button and move on to the next section. If time runs out, don't worry; your work will automatically be saved, and you will be evaluated on the work that you were able to complete. Your results are sent directly to Concord Academy, so there is no need to print a copy of your results to submit with your course request materials. Remember that the results are used for placement purposes only, and you are not expected to be able to answer all the questions.
Remember that this placement test must be completed by 3:00 p.m. May 12, which is the posted course request deadline. If you have any questions about the placement test, please do not hesitate to contact me.
