Letter from the Academic Dean to New Families

April 2017

Dear Entering Students and Parents,

Welcome to Concord Academy! We are very happy you are now part of the school community. I look forward to welcoming you to CA personally.

I’m writing to share with you some information about how we prepare for the fall. This is an exciting time — one filled with choice, and with possibility.

In order to create as personalized a program for you as possible, we ask every family to complete a series of forms and return them to us. You can find all of those forms, including a checklist of the required forms, by visiting the following link:

Because we want to be prepared for the fall, the deadline for returning the forms on the checklist is Wednesday, May 10. Please download the forms you need, complete them, and include them in your mailing to Sue Sauer, CA’s registrar; please use the mailing label that was enclosed in our April mailing. If you need a hard copy of any of the forms, or if you have questions, please call Sue at (978) 402-2274.

We ask you to do this paperwork to prepare your child for one of CA’s best academic traditions, which we call "Add/Drop" for the way in which students can change their schedule to meet their needs and interests. My favorite part of Add/Drop is hearing student conversations around courses they hope to take, reflecting our core value of promoting a love of learning. It’s a commitment, written into our mission statement, that imbues what we do here at Concord: we pursue our courses, and extracurriculars, with passion.

We also pursue them with guidance. I am well aware that choosing classes at a new school might seem daunting. We guide new students and parents to understand many things over a short period of time: how our block schedule works, how the course request process works, who teachers are, etc. We understand this is an important process for you, and so we have done a number of things to make sure this process goes smoothly for you.

First, we have arranged for you to work with an interim academic advisor over the next few weeks as you request classes for the coming year. Their name and contact information is on the brightly colored sheet of paper that was enclosed in our April mailing. In the past, incoming students and parents have found their interim academic advisors very helpful, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to them for guidance. Class schedules will be available when it is time to order textbooks from our online bookstore. The online bookstore is scheduled to open in early August (you will receive information about the ordering process over the summer). 

Once you arrive at the school, you will be assigned a more permanent advisor. The role of advisor is one we invest a significant amount of time in. Advisors provide guidance, support, and mentorship on a more permanent and regular basis to our students. According to our alums, who often stay in touch with their advisors decades beyond their time at CA, advisors are a critical resource and a caring presence.

This is the first step. The forms found at this link – all course request materials – will start the process. Shortly after the May 10 deadline, we will contact you again for the next phase.
