Letter from the Academic Dean to New Families

April 2018

Dear Entering Students and Parents,

Welcome to Concord Academy! We are very happy you are now part of the school community.

I’m writing to share with you some information about how we prepare for the fall. This is an exciting time — one filled with choice, and with possibility.

In order to create as personalized a program for you as possible, we ask every family to complete a series of forms and return them to us. You can find all of those forms by visiting the following link:

all course request materials

Because we want to be prepared for the fall, the deadline for returning the forms on the checklist is 3:00 p.m. Wednesday May 9. Please download the forms you need, complete them, and include them in your mailing to Sue Sauer, CA’s registrar (by email attachments, fax, or postal mail, as indicated on the checklist). If you need a hard copy of any of the forms, or if you have questions, please call Sue at 978-402-2274.

I am well aware that choosing classes at a new school might seem daunting. We guide new students and parents to understand many things over a short period of time: how our block schedule works, how the course request process works, who teachers are, etc. We understand this is an important process for you, and so we have done a number of things to make sure this process goes smoothly for you.

We have arranged for you to work with an interim academic advisor over the next few weeks as you request classes for the coming year. Their name and contact information were included in the email sent directly to your family. In the past, incoming students and parents have found their interim academic advisors very helpful, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to them for guidance.

Once you arrive at the school, you will be assigned a more permanent advisor, an assignment guided by information we'll ask you to provide later this spring. The role of advisor is one in which we invest a significant amount of time. Advisors provide guidance, support, and mentorship on a more permanent and regular basis to our students. According to our alums, who often stay in touch with their advisors decades beyond their time at CA, advisors are a critical resource and a caring presence.

On the basis of students' course requests submitted in May and departments' placement-level decisions, student schedules will be created over the summer. The online bookstore will open in early August, at which time textbooks for the students' listed fall courses can be ordered (you will receive information this summer about the ordering process). Finalized student schedules with courses and teachers will be provided on registration day at the start of school. Students who wish to change their course requests will have the opportunity to do so during the drop/add period in the fall.

Choosing courses to request is the first step. The forms found at this link – all course request materials – will start the process. Early in June we will contact you again for the next phase.

I hope this finds you well, excited about the coming year. Again, welcome to Concord Academy. We look forward to getting to know you well over the coming months and years.

Best wishes for an enjoyable spring.

Sincerely,

John A. Drew
Assistant Head/Academic Dean

Reminder: Forms are due by 3:00 p.m. May 9. For methods of transmittal, see the checklist at the link at the END of this letter.
